week7 cancer in two spots

I'm Chengqi Xu. This week I was still shadowing with Dr. Manish Shah and a clinical fellow Dr. Joshua Fein at GI clinic. We had seen a patient who comes abroad with inconclusive origin of two cancer spots. Prior to coming to WCM/NYP, she had regular body examination and the local hospital had found her there are skeptical tumors in both stomach and the lung pleura. Have arrived at US, she firstly went to the memorial sloan kettering center for diagnostics consulting. After that, she came to Dr. Shah's clinic and hoped to seek treatment in the US.

When a person has cancer in two different spots in her body, the doctor usually needs a comprehensive and detailed examination of the molecular profiles of the tumors from different origins. Different drugs are often used to target against tumors. Moreover, the doctor also need to prioritises which cancers are required to be firstly treated in order to benefit the patient most. By collaborating with experts in other fields, we can give a more comprehensive and valid treatment regiment, such as prioritisation of the best combinations of drugs to target tumors at the same time. Precision medicine can help combat second cancers in complicated scenarios like in this case.
